What’s this JMagic Thing?

Ever heard the phrase “Will it play in Peoria?” Well, I played in Peoria, quite literally, opening up for acts like MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, EPMD, Chubb Rock, DJ Quik, and more as the singing front-woman of a hip hip dance krew known as “Mercedes.” 

Each member of the krew had a nickname, so we combined the J from my first name and Magic (the name of my horse because what good Midwestern girl doesn’t ride?) to create “JMagic,” when we got our matching Mercedes tattoos. Hey, I was 18.

The nickname stuck, and now it’s a term of affection that I share with friends and the fantastic coworkers I spend most of my waking hours problem-solving and co-creating with on Zoom. If you see a Camry speeding through the streets of Portland, OR with “JMagic” on the plates, you’ve spotted me.
